M/Y Harmony: Yacht and Crew in Perfect Tune

Captain Michael knows yachts. In addition to his wit and charm, he leaves no doubt that on his ship, guests are secure in the most capable hands. He escorted the Select Yachts team through M/Y Harmony, docked at Bahia Mar, Fort Lauderdale, in the interim between near back-to-back Bahamas charters. We wondered about the weather rolling ominously across the Atlantic. The Captain was nonplussed. “Summer seems to be quite good. Hurricanes? We just dodge ‘em.” (Well, sure, when you’re gripping the helm of a dream machine like this 164-foot Westport it’s an option.) “I’m originally from Australia” he grinned, “We’re dodging hurricanes all the time. Just part of the business.”

M/Y Harmony boasts intelligent architecture.

The build was entirely customized by the original owner, a homebuilder with a certain genius for design. For example, pocket doors keep the master suite totally private during social functions, or enclose the study/office to conduct business meetings undisturbed. The elevator, paneled in beveled mirror tiles, connects all deck levels. On the sundeck it is cleverly concealed in a counter-height space so as not to disrupt the architectural flow and views. You can fit a wheelchair in, but perhaps a bit narrow for a standard size. In fact, doors are slightly wider throughout M/Y Harmony to be more handicapped accessible.

The bright, spacious, main deck master suite takes full advantage of the yacht’s 30’ beam, even in the his-and-hers bathroom with central Jacuzzi tub. For us, the stateroom that had the wow factor was the sixth, the VIP suite on the bridge deck. Huge picture windows and a private balcony starboard made this romantic room with a view a Select Yachts favorite. On the port side, an identical balcony accessible from the sky lounge is appealingly intimate.

On our visit, the fun seemed to be happening in the professional galley. Not one but two chefs, Head Chef, Stacey Smith, and Sous Chef, Caitlyn Howard, were merrily stirring up aromas to instantly make you ravenous. They explained that they offer two different meals and split the cooking. Chief Stewardess, Tracey Vanderwesthuizen, was adding an extra dash of happy energy to the recipe.

The sky lounge with sprawling sofa and panoramic views, beckons a leisurely cocktail and a recap of the days events. Tea for two would be delightful inside or on the pocket balcony to port. On the aft deck – outside – the furnishing is so velvety and plush it begs you to melt down in blissful surrender.

The Sundeck is equipped with everything one expects aboard a super yacht and then some. The sprawling sofa is raised to provide panoramic views. The fully protected dining arrangement features a hydraulic table that converts the area for coffee or cocktails and canapés. The popular forward facing sun pad is the perfect perch when entering any port of call. Toys and two new Yamaha Waverunners are neatly housed in the garage to allow for uncluttered use of exterior decks. The yacht also tows a 35’ Everglades fishing boat to thrill deep-sea fishing enthusiasts.

Captain Michael loves boats. Initially he pursued a career in hotel management, but succumbed to the irresistible opportunity to work on a fishing boat. Three months later he was on a cargo ship, setting a course with a goal to achieve his Captain’s license. He has commanded yachts all over the world; the Great Lakes, Alaska, the Baltic Sea, the Mediterranean, the US East and West Coasts, Mexico and the Caribbean. His favorite charter destination for families with children is the Exumas, Bahamas. His favorite yachting destination in the world is Croatia. His itinerary; “Start in Venice and end up in Dubrovnik. Everything is beautiful, the sea, the landscape, the food and the people.”

M/Y Harmony is stylish, comfortable and immaculate.

The Captain and crew are consummate professionals, the yacht is beautiful. Her popularity is no surprise. Harmony has repeat clients that have already booked her for St. Barth’s this Christmas, but this sought-after yacht still has limited availability for the 2016 Caribbean season. We strongly encourage you to inquire today.
