LEOPARD 3 WINS MAXI YACHT WORLD CHAMPIONS
Leopard 3 was first over the line at the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup in Porto Cervo, Sardinia last week. The Leopard 3 crew proudly celebrated their win after becoming the champions of the prestigious Maxi Racing Class at the 27th edition of the regatta.
Spectators and participants had the privilege of witnessing some of the world’s best Maxi’s raced by some of the industry’s most highly-skilled crews. Complex courses and the stunning backdrop of Sardinia make this an unparalleled regatta. The permanent crew on board Leopard 3 operates with flawless team work that ensures this superb Maxi sails seamlessly at all times, whether in charter or race mode or a combination of the two.
After a fascinating, week long duel between Mike Slade’s British Maxi ‘Leopard 3’ and George David’s American Maxi ‘Rambler 88’, the winner of the biggest prize in Maxi racing hung on the very last race. Tensions were high but the Leopard camp remained positive and focused.
During the 30-mile decider, the two high-performance yachts were locked in an intense battle, never more than a few boat lengths apart. At the finish line, Mike Slade’s Farr 100 Leopard 3 was just seconds ahead of Rambler 88, to claim one of the biggest prizes in the sport.
“A recent major refit to add more sail power combined with winning every start was the key to our success. Huge thanks to the crew for all the long hours put in to turn Leopard 3 in to a world beater. Winning at the Maxis is a wonderful achievement” commented owner/driver Mike Slade.
Charter sailing yacht Leopard 3 will be back in racing action from September 24-October 2 at Les Voiles de St Tropez, before competing in the 3000-mile RORC Transatlantic Race, Saturday, November 26, with a team made up of permanent and guest crew. A full Caribbean season will follow where further racing and charter opportunities are available.
