Barbuda: Beauty Off the Charts
Barbuda has an historical record that stretches back to 2400 BC. Columbus landed here on his second voyage in 1493 and 19th century British “colonized” this 62 square-mile island. Yet this seductive spot has remained well below the radar as a Caribbean destination.
Barbuda is located about 32nm north of Antigua, in the middle of the Leeward Islands. To the south are the islands of Montserrat and Guadeloupe, and to the west and north west are Nevis, St. Kitts, St. Barts, and St. Martin.
Charter yachts include Barbuda on their itinerary for guests who love nature. The white and pink sand beaches are spectacular for sunning, swimming and snorkeling. Beautiful reefs surrounding the island are the resting places of many shipwrecks and the home to an abundance of fish. The island is one of the few for caving, with Amerindian petroglyphs decorating cave walls.
Barbuda is home to thousands of birds, especially the imposing Frigates. Bring your camera to the Frigate Bird Sanctuary, located in the island’s northwestern Codrington Lagoon and accessible only by boat.
Nearby, charter guest are welcome at the exquisite Barbuda Belle luxury hotel. The hotel’s Mangrove Restaurant serves French seafood with a local twist, sumptuously prepared by the executive Chef. This family-run venture was conceived 25 years ago, when a couple of fishing enthusiasts fell in love with the island. Spend a few relaxing hours sipping a signature cocktail and enjoying the amenities at this enchanting luxury hotel, nestled among the mangroves near the bird sanctuary at Codrington Lagoon. One of the last, undeveloped Caribbean islands, this remote paradise hideaway is still a place of peaceful seclusion. But you should probably charter there soon. Robert De Niro, partnered by casino billionaire James Packer, is proposing to build a US$ 250 million leisure resort on the defunct K Club, a refuge of Princess Diana and other high profile celebrities during the 1990s. If that happens, things will never be the same.
