Crew Profile

Captain Pogan grew up in a boating family. From childhood his family owned a boat and summer vacations were spent at Lake Cumberland. At the tender age of five years old he was helping his dad steer the family pontoon boat.
Captain Gregory Pogan first visited St Thomas in the summer of 1998, to witness a wedding. Falling in love with the islands, he did not waste any time, and moved to St Thomas in the fall of 1998. Captain Pogan has spent the last 15 years exploring the waters of the Virgin Islands as a rescue diver and charter captain. Originally from Ohio he studied Management and Marketing at Ashland University, but after working on land in St Thomas for almost two years realized that his passion was for boating and the sea, started earning his USCG 100 Ton license in 2001.
"Pogan" as he likes to be called, loves nothing more than to be on the water, with visitors and locals alike, sharing the beautiful sights, abundant nature, and amazing stories he has collected over the years about our local Caribbean islands. Laid back, professional, and knowledgeable are some terms frequently used to describe his personality. Captain Pogan looks forward to helping Safari's guests have experiences and create memories that they will treasure for a lifetime!

Chef Julia Ray grew up in Michigan surrounded by the Great Lakes, and learned to love boating and sailing on frequent family outings. Julia first began visiting the Virgin Islands with her family more than 30 years ago and began making annual trips back. Her love for the islands led her to determine that one day; she would make them her permanent home.
Growing up, Julias family was passionate about cooking and instilled that passion in her. Julia worked in the restaurant and hospitality industries, and had a small catering business while earning degrees in both accounting and social work. Although she had a successful career in the corporate world, Julia left it all behind in 2013 to realize her dream of living in the Virgin Islands and joined her husband, Stephan, aboard Safari as mate and chef.
Energetic and personable, Julia loves meeting and entertaining people. Julias hobbies include running and swimming. She also spends much of her spare time in the kitchen, preparing and perfecting new recipes for friends and family to sample. Julia delights in spoiling Safaris guests with gourmet meals and tempting treats. She prepares a wide variety of meals, and especially enjoys highlighting local ingredients and cuisine. Special diets or food allergies are no problem. Julia takes much pride in her ability to tailor each meal to her guests individual tastes!
