Crew Profile

CAPTAIN:
William "Teddy" Waldo has been sailing the waters of the BVIs since the early 1990s when he was three. He became a first mate at age 11 and completed his keelboat training at 16. He graduated High School as Valedictorian at 17 and attended both Middlebury College and Northern Arizona University but his passion for both the sea and the friendly culture and people of the British Virgin Islands brought him back to the Islands. He began his captaining career in early 2012 when he began work for a prominent BVI based charter company . He was able to exponentially expand both his sailing experience and practical knowledge of the Voyage boats by working in many different capacities for the company for over four years. When not on charter, Teddy worked with the maintenance team as well as did briefings for clients chartering vessels as bareboat captains. He currently has a 200 ton commercial license, is a PADI certified Advanced Open Water Diver and has completed his Marine Safety STCW 10 in addition to his training in First Aid and Security.

While on charter, Teddy's easy going nature, patience and sense of balancing both safety, and fun allow guests to fully enjoy their vacation. His mastery of the boat systems makes guests feel at ease and his expert knowledge of the islands and their waters adds something special to each voyage. The eldest of five, Ted is excellent with children and enjoys opening their eyes to the wonders of the ocean. Whether guests enjoy lounging in a secluded bay, snorkeling a beautiful coral reef or a shipwreck, sailing fast on a beam reach, lazily traveling downwind or finding the best place to enjoy a cocktail, Teddy knows just how to help guests realize their ideal vacation.

CHEF:
Although Kristen was born and raised in Colorado, her ocean influence began at an early age. Her family holiday home was in Kona, Hawaii and was the place she became entranced by the sea and what lived in it. She was Junior Open Water Scuba Dive certified at 14 and was diving, snorkeling and surfing at a young age. She was also a competitive swimmer, swimming in summer leagues since she was five and competed for her high school.

She began working in restaurants at 16 and was continually involved in the restaurant industry while attending college. She graduated from Colorado State University and immediately began working for celebrity Chef Tyler Florence in the San Francisco Bay Area, assisting with his restaurant and retail operations. She assisted with the promotions and openings of all three of his restaurants and was the Assistant Brand Merchant for his kitchen and home shops. She was also highly involved with his food branding projects as well as his wine label.

After a friend has told her about the Virgin Islands and the employment opportunities available while living on a tropical island her move was eminent. She started working at XO Bistro helping to build and create a revamped wine list with her experience and knowledge with her previous position with the renowned restaurant group. She continued to further her wine education and was certified with the Grand Master Sommelier for the first level course.

However, she soon was becoming disenchanted with the idea of living on land while being so close to the sea. An opportunity presented itself for a major life change. She went on a sailing trip with a group of friends and one of them was looking for a chef for his next season of sail chartering and offered her the job, it didn't take her long to accept the offer.

She is now back in the Caribbean for another charter season and is working as crew on boat deliveries, the most recent being a transatlantic crossing. She has expanded her diving career into freediving after completing her first course with plans to continue into an Instructors role. She is also planning her Yacht Masters for the next year and is looking forward to continue cooking, sailing and exploring the beautiful Virgin Islands for another charter season.
